Say Goodbye to Painful Varicose Veins: Expert Treatments
For many people, varicose veins primarily pose a cosmetic problem. These visible, bulging veins might make you feel self-conscious wearing shorts, for example.
In some cases, though, the issue isn’t just visual. Varicose veins can come with physical symptoms. If your veins cause you discomfort — whether that’s a burning sensation, throbbing, or something else — we can help eliminate the pain.
At Vascular & Interventional Associates in Crestview Hills, Kentucky, our providers have several treatment options for varicose veins. We can remove the problem vein or seal it shut, allowing your body to redirect blood to other healthy blood vessels. This should eliminate your symptoms while helping the varicose vein fade from view.
We proudly offer expert vein care to people throughout northern Kentucky, as well as in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the surrounding area.
Why varicose veins can cause pain
Your veins are a bit like one-way streets. Blood is supposed to flow in one direction through them. In the same way that traffic signs direct cars in the appropriate direction down these streets, valves in your veins keep blood flowing toward your heart.
If a car turns the wrong way down a one-way street, it causes problems. The same is true for blood in your veins. A varicose vein develops when the valves in the vein fail, allowing blood to flow in the opposite direction. That causes pooling in the blood vessel, contributing to the bulging that characterizes varicose veins.
That pooling blood increases pressure in the vein. That can lead to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including:
- Aching
- Throbbing
- Burning
- Itching
- Cramping
That’s obviously not ideal. But there is a silver lining here.
Insurance typically only covers varicose vein treatment when it’s medically necessary. If you want to address varicose veins for purely cosmetic reasons, you usually have to pay out of pocket. If you’re experiencing painful symptoms, however, we can make the case that treatment is medically necessary. That makes it much easier to get insurance to cover the cost.
How we can get rid of painful varicose veins
The Vascular & Interventional Associates team offers a variety of treatments to help you say goodbye to a varicose vein and its painful symptoms.
Treatment centers around sealing shut the problem vein or physically removing it. Then, your body redirects blood flow to one of the thousands of other healthy blood vessels in your legs.
With the vein out of commission, blood can’t pool in it. This should eliminate your uncomfortable symptoms. In the weeks after treatment, your body absorbs what remains of the defunct vein. As it does, the vein fades from view.
To address painful varicose veins, we offer the following treatments:
- Endovenous laser ablation, which seals the vein shut with heat from the laser
- Radiofrequency ablation, which seals the vein shut with RF energy
- Varithena®, a foam medication we inject that causes the vein’s walls to stick together
- Microphlebectomy, a minor surgery to physically remove the vein
