Sclerotherapy vs. Laser Ablation: Choosing the Right Spider Vein Treatment in Northern Kentucky and
Spider veins can be a nuisance. These damaged blood vessels might be visible precisely where you don’t want them, such as on your face or legs. Even if they don’t cause any uncomfortable symptoms, they might make you feel less comfortable in your skin.
If this sounds familiar to you, visit Vascular & Interventional Associates. Our experienced providers help people throughout northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio, with spider veins. We offer multiple forms of treatment to minimize the appearance of problem blood vessels. Here, we go over two of the most popular options: sclerotherapy and laser ablation.
Sclerotherapy: The gold standard for spider veins
If you come to us with spider veins, this is the treatment we’re most likely to recommend.
Sclerotherapy works by sealing off the spider vein. During treatment, we use an extremely fine needle to inject a specialized solution into the problematic vein. This solution hardens in your vein, closing it off. Your body then redirects blood flow to neighboring healthy veins.
Once the vein stops functioning, your body starts the work of absorbing it. Over time, that typically causes the vein to disappear from view. You should notice a change within a few weeks and see your full results in about six weeks.
To fully clear your spider veins, we might recommend a series of sclerotherapy treatments. People usually get the best results with 3-5 sclerotherapy appointments. Wearing a compression garment on the area encourages the vein to close, so we may recommend that, too.
Sclerotherapy is our first-line treatment for spider veins because it’s so effective, plus it’s safe and minimally invasive. In some cases, though, we might discuss an alternative treatment with you.
When laser ablation is better for problem veins
Sclerotherapy is your best option when you’re trying to address spider veins. Occasionally, however, someone comes to us thinking they have spider veins — but they’re dealing with a different venous issue.
If you have a varicose vein, meaning blood is flowing backward through the vein and accumulating, we might recommend laser ablation. Specifically, we offer endovenous laser ablation.
During this treatment, we insert a tiny probe into the vein, then use laser energy to heat and close it. Your body routes blood through different veins, and the treated varicose vein disappears in time.
When you visit us at Vascular & Interventional Associates, we can help you figure out what’s going on with your veins, then develop a vein treatment plan that’s right for you.
