How Modern Treatments Can Help Prostate Cancer

How Modern Treatments Can Help Prostate Cancer

As medical research advances, doctors get better and better at treating a wide range of cancers. New immunotherapies help the body’s immune system fight the abnormal cells more effectively, for example.

Still, getting a cancer diagnosis often feels scary and disheartening. To offset that, we want to offer some good news.

At Vascular & Interventional Associates, our providers can provide a variety of minimally invasive treatments that can target and destroy cancer. As prostate specialists, we support men throughout northern Kentucky and the Cincinnati, Ohio, area, and we can partner with your oncologist to help you find the right treatment.

Leading-edge treatments for prostate cancer

Researchers have identified a number of emerging treatments for targeting cancerous cells in your prostate. Options fall into two broad categories:

Ablation

Ablation means destroying selected tissues in your body. We can do that by freezing the cancerous tissue (cryoablation) or targeting them with radiofrequency energy.

Recent research has found that cryoablation can be effective for people with early-stage prostate cancer or in cases where the cancer has come back. It also comes with a lower risk of long-term complications like erectile dysfunction (ED) and urinary incontinence (UI).

Other research has shown that radiofrequency ablation can help treat prostate cancer with minimal side effects, too.

Our team uses sophisticated probes guided by advanced imaging to perform ablation at our office.

Embolization

With prostate artery embolization, we inject particles into the blood vessels connected to your tumor. That cuts off the blood supply.

If we use chemotherapeutic particles, it’s called chemoembolization. This is emerging as an exciting new treatment for prostate cancer.

Radioactive particles are another option — injecting these into a tumor is called radioembolization. Researchers are exploring this as a powerful new prostate cancer treatment option.

Finding the right treatment for you

The right treatment for your prostate cancer depends on its stage (how advanced it is), the symptoms you’re experiencing, and other factors that are specific to you. It’s important to work closely with your oncologist to develop a treatment plan that supports you and your goals.

If ablation or embolization would be a good fit for you, talk with our team. We can collaborate with your oncologist to make sure the minimally invasive procedure you choose aligns with your overall treatment plan.
